Carriers now block boarding for visa-exempt travelers to the United Kingdom without a valid Electronic Travel Authorisation. The Home Office mandates the ETA for nationals from 85 countries previously entering visa-free for short stays. Enforcement starts February 25 with airlines rail operators and ferry companies required to verify status digitally before departure.

The ETA constitutes digital pre-clearance for tourism business visits or family trips up to six months. Applications submit via the official UK government portal with passport details photo and eligibility declarations. Most approvals process within minutes though applicants must apply at least three working days in advance. The fee stands at £16 valid for two years or passport expiry allowing multiple entries.

Affected nationalities span the United States Canada Australia Japan South Korea Brazil UAE Saudi Arabia Costa Rica and numerous EU states. Exemptions include British Irish citizens specific residency holders and certain transit passengers bypassing border control. Dual British or Irish nationals present those passports without ETA eligibility.

The policy completes the phased introduction of the ETA scheme initiated in 2023. Authorities integrate automated verification with carrier systems preventing non-compliant journeys. Travelers obtain electronic confirmation though retaining documentation aids checks at departure or arrival points.

This enforcement phase prioritizes border security and processing efficiency for low-risk visitors. The UK aligns with global pre-authorisation frameworks while preserving visa obligations for higher-risk categories. Passengers from listed countries secure approval beforehand to ensure uninterrupted travel plans.
