Visitors from 85 countries including the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Brazil, and several EU member states now require an Electronic Travel Authorisation before traveling to the United Kingdom for short stays. The requirement became mandatory on February 25 with enforcement by airlines, rail, and shipping operators preventing boarding without approval. The change shifts from previous visa-free access for tourism, business, or family visits up to six months.

The ETA functions as a digital pre-screening permission linked to the traveler’s passport. Applications occur through the official UK ETA app on mobile devices where applicants submit passport details, a photo, contact information, and answers to eligibility questions. Most approvals occur automatically within minutes though applicants must submit at least three working days before departure. The authorisation costs £16 with future increases planned to £20.

Validity extends for two years or until passport expiry whichever comes first and permits multiple entries with stays up to six months each. Travelers must use the same passport for application and travel. Rejection requires reapplication without appeal rights and may necessitate a full visa instead. Exemptions apply to British and Irish citizens certain settled status holders and specific transit cases without border passage.

Dual nationals face additional scrutiny. British or Irish citizens regardless of additional nationalities must present a valid UK or Irish passport and cannot obtain an ETA. Failure to comply risks boarding denial. The Home Office integrates automated digital checks with carriers to verify compliance before departure.

The measure forms part of the UK’s digital immigration overhaul to enhance border security and streamline processing. Authorities emphasize application in advance to avoid travel disruptions. Passport control upon arrival remains required and entry denial persists possible for other reasons despite ETA approval.

No physical document issuance occurs as the ETA links electronically to the passport though retaining a record copy is advisable. The rollout follows phased implementation with full mandatory enforcement marking the final transition. Travelers from affected countries planning UK trips must secure approval to board transport. The system aligns with similar pre-authorisation models elsewhere while maintaining visa requirements for those previously needing them.
