Commercial aviation in Rio de Janeiro faced a massive logistical overhaul this week as authorities effectively shut down Santos Dumont Airport (SDU) to secure the G20 Leaders’ Summit. From November 18 through November 19, the city’s central domestic hub suspended all commercial flights, forcing airlines including Azul, Gol, and LATAM to divert operations to the distant Galeรฃo International Airport (GIG). The closure was mandated by the Ministry of Ports and Airports due to Santos Dumontโ€™s proximity to the Museum of Modern Art, the summitโ€™s primary venue, which sits less than 600 meters from the runway.

Mayor Eduardo Paes orchestrated a six-day “mega-holiday” extending from Republic Day on November 15 through Black Consciousness Day on November 20 to mitigate the gridlock caused by the arrival of delegations from 40 countries. While this measure successfully thinned commuter traffic, it left thousands of tourists navigating a confused transit landscape marked by military checkpoints and road closures throughout the “Zona Sul.” Security perimeters were particularly tight around Copacabana and Flamengo, where armored vehicles and armed forces monitored the movement of high-profile dignitaries, including U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Travelers attempting to leave the city during the summit window faced significantly longer transit times, as the shift to Galeรฃo added nearly 15 kilometers to the typical airport commute for those staying in the city center. Ride-share prices surged as demand concentrated on the single operational hub, although the Rio de Janeiro light rail system remained active to shuttle passengers through the blocked downtown corridor. Operational normalcy is expected to return slowly as the final diplomatic entourages depart, but the temporary displacement of flights has highlighted the delicate balance between Rio’s tourism infrastructure and its role on the geopolitical stage.
