The morning felt like a festival on Florida’s Space Coast. Families lined the waterfront with phones ready. Kids pointed at tugboats and argued over who would hear the horn first. Even before the ship came into view, you could feel a big moment building for cruise fans and the curious alike.

Port workers waved from the piers and volunteers handed out souvenirs. Locals who know the best vantage spots staked out Jetty Park early. The buzz had been growing for weeks as the port prepared to host a celebration for a debut that would draw a crowd.

That excitement turned into a roar when Royal Caribbean’s Star of the Seas, now the world’s largest cruise ship, eased away from Port Canaveral on its official maiden voyage Sunday. The new Icon Class giant edges out its famous sister by the slimmest of margins and tips the scales at nearly 249,000 gross tons.

The floating city spreads across twenty decks and is built to keep thousands entertained from sunrise to well past midnight. On board you will find the largest waterpark at sea, an adults only pool with a sweeping view, and more than forty places to eat and drink. There is even a full stage production of Back to the Future complete with a DeLorean that actually flies.

Royal Caribbean’s leadership framed the launch as the next chapter in a bigger plan to reimagine the family vacation. “Here we are introducing the boldest family vacation ever! Star of the Seas delivers everything families want in a vacation with more adventure and more ways to make unforgettable memories together,” said Michael Bayley, the company’s president and CEO. “We’ve created the world’s best vacation for all ages yet again, and it’s truly a magical moment to celebrate that with our Royal Caribbean family who made it all possible.

Port Canaveral officials welcomed the ship with the traditional plaque exchange and plenty of hometown pride. “We are enormously proud of our longtime partnership with Royal Caribbean and very excited to have this magnificent new ship join their fleet of vessels homeported here,” said Capt. John Murray, the port’s CEO and port director. “Star of the Seas is a substantial addition and underscores the growing demand for cruising from our Port. After months of planning, preparation and facilities improvements we’ve made, our team is ready to provide the high-quality guest experience that has become our hallmark.”

The first weeklong itinerary highlights why the ship will call Central Florida home. Guests are heading for warm water stops like San Juan and St Kitts along with Cozumel and the cruise line’s private island in The Bahamas. For many on board, the promise of both beach time and headline entertainment made this sailing an easy yes.

This debut follows a flurry of preview sailings and ceremonies in August that drew cruise watchers from around the country. The buildup gave fans an early look at the new neighborhoods and shows that set the Icon Class apart while keeping the biggest surprises for the official sendoff.

Industry watchers say the timing could not be better. Cruise demand has surged again this year with millions of Americans booking ocean vacations and chasing new ships like this one. If the cheers on the pier were any hint, Star of the Seas arrived to a market more than ready for its moment.
