The Nigeria Railway Corporation has introduced a 50 percent discount on train fares across its network. The reduction applies to all routes and passenger categories during the Yuletide period. This measure aims to alleviate high transportation costs faced by travelers.

The promotion runs from December 23, 2025, to January 4, 2026. Managing Director Kayode Opeifa confirmed the directive originated from the Federal Government. The discount responds to surging prices in alternative modes like road and air travel.

Road transport fares have escalated sharply in recent weeks. Some intercity bus tickets now exceed N500,000 due to seasonal demand and supply constraints. Airfares have also risen, prompting many to seek affordable options.

Train services offer routes including Lagos to Ibadan, Abuja to Kaduna, and Warri to Itakpe. The corporation operates modern coaches on standard-gauge lines with improved safety features. Stations provide enhanced amenities such as air-conditioned waiting areas.

Opeifa noted last year’s free rides caused overcrowding and discomfort for regular commuters. The half-price approach balances accessibility with operational sustainability. It prioritizes genuine long-distance passengers over short-hop users.

The initiative supports mass movement during peak holiday seasons. Millions travel annually for family reunions, festivals, and religious observances. Rail transport reduces road congestion and accident risks on major highways.

Passenger feedback highlights appreciation for the relief amid economic pressures. Bookings have increased following the announcement on national television. Online and station ticket sales reflect higher demand.

The corporation plans further service improvements. Upgrades include better restaurant facilities and passenger care protocols. These align with efforts to position rail as a reliable domestic travel choice.

This fare cut addresses immediate holiday needs while promoting rail usage. Travelers gain cost savings on key corridors connecting economic hubs and population centers.

Industry observers see potential for sustained ridership growth. Affordable pricing encourages shifts from road to rail for medium-distance journeys. The period covers Christmas, New Year, and extended celebrations.
