Hainan Free Trade Port has posted early positive indicators following the Boao Forum for Asia 2026. Cross-border trade volumes rose 22 percent year on year. Customs clearance times shortened by 68 percent while 47 new international routes entered service.
The developments coincide with the forum’s opening in Qionghai from March 24 to 27. Hainan authorities opened dedicated one-stop immigration channels at Haikou Meilan International Airport and other entry points to handle increased international arrivals. The measures target forum participants and business travelers.
Officials reported a surge in business travel linked to the free trade port policies. A $920 million investment in green energy projects also materialized in the period. The island-wide special customs operations, launched in December 2025, underpin the accelerated connectivity with ASEAN and Asian markets.
Hainan Qionghai Bo’ao International Airport recently activated a new all-cargo route to Ho Chi Minh City operated by JD Airlines. The weekly service uses Boeing 737-800 freighters with 22-ton payload capacity per flight. Such links support the shift toward higher-value logistics and tourism consumption.
The free trade port now applies zero tariffs to 74 percent of imported goods. This framework has driven growth in duty-free shopping, medical tourism at the Boao Lecheng zone, and international education offerings. Passenger traffic at major airports entered a peak period starting March 22.
Forum sessions include dedicated discussions on free trade port development and global connectivity. Nearly 2,000 representatives from over 60 countries and regions are attending under the theme “Shaping Our Shared Future: New Dynamics, New Opportunities, New Cooperation.” Hainan positions itself as a gateway for institutional opening-up amid broader regional integration.
Travelers to the island should anticipate enhanced processing at entry points during the forum window. The combination of new air routes and streamlined customs aims to convert policy advantages into sustained visitor and investor flows. Further route expansions and investment announcements remain under review as the event unfolds.
