Europe’s Top Airports for a Hassle-Free Summer Trip Revealed

As summer travel ramps up across Europe, some airports are making the journey a breeze, while others leave travelers frustrated. AirHelp, a group focused on passenger rights, recently shared its yearly ranking of global airports, spotlighting which ones excel and which ones falter based on punctuality, passenger feedback, and service quality.
Smaller airports in Scandinavia and beyond are stealing the show. Bergen Flesland in Norway stands out as Europe’s top performer, ranking ninth worldwide. Its knack for keeping flights on time earned it high praise. Other standouts include Bilbao Airport in Spain’s Basque region, Bodø Airport and Oslo Gardermoen in Norway, and Reykjavik Keflavík in Iceland. These airports combine smooth operations with solid customer care, making them reliable choices for travelers.
On the flip side, bigger hubs like Paris Charles de Gaulle and London Gatwick struggled. Paris Charles de Gaulle, sitting at 181st globally, faced frequent delays and poor passenger reviews. London Gatwick fared even worse, landing at 235th with low scores across the board. Rhodes Diagoras in Greece took the unfortunate title of Europe’s worst airport, with only 58% of flights on time, placing it just above the world’s lowest-ranked airport, Tunis Carthage.
AirHelp’s rankings lean heavily on punctuality, which makes up 60% of an airport’s score. This measures flights that depart or arrive within 15 minutes of schedule. The rest comes from passenger thoughts on staff, cleanliness, and amenities like dining and shopping. Luxembourg Airport, despite its 130th global rank, won travelers over with a stellar 9.0 for customer satisfaction. Meanwhile, Amsterdam Schiphol impressed with its food and drink options, scoring 8.3 in that category.
For those flying through France, Toulouse-Blagnac led the pack but still only hit 101st globally. It scored decently for punctuality and customer feedback but lagged in shopping and dining. Recent air-traffic control issues in France likely didn’t help.
The data, collected from June 2024 to May 2025, comes from flight records, government stats, and over 13,500 traveler reviews across 58 countries. Only airports with plenty of international flights made the cut. Cape Town International Airport in South Africa topped the global list, with an 8.6 for punctuality and 8.7 for customer opinion.
Smaller airports often shine because they prioritize efficiency and clear communication. If you’re planning a trip, consider routing through places like Bergen or Bilbao to dodge the chaos of bigger hubs. It could make your summer getaway a lot smoother.
