China has introduced a comprehensive mobile application designed specifically for international visitors to simplify payments, transportation, and daily transactions. The “Nihao China” app integrates multiple services previously challenging for foreigners due to reliance on local digital platforms.

The app enables cashless payments at merchants across the country, including small vendors and public transport systems. It supports booking rides, purchasing train and flight tickets, and reserving hotel rooms without needing separate Chinese accounts.

Foreign tourists often faced barriers using dominant apps like WeChat Pay and Alipay, which require local bank links or verification processes. “Nihao China” addresses this by allowing direct linkage to international credit cards, including Visa and Mastercard.

The launch aligns with efforts to boost inbound tourism, which has lagged behind pre-pandemic levels. Authorities aim to attract more visitors by reducing friction in digital transactions and navigation.

The application includes real-time translation features, maps optimized for tourists, and emergency contact options. It operates in multiple languages, with English as the primary interface for non-Chinese speakers.

Government data indicates foreign visitor numbers remain below 2019 figures, partly due to payment difficulties and app restrictions. The new tool targets markets in Europe, North America, and Southeast Asia.
