Los Angeles traffic often turns short trips into hour-long ordeals on congested freeways. Archer Aviation aims to change that with battery-powered flying taxis capable of reducing a 90-minute drive to just five minutes in flight. Priced similarly to an Uber Black ride, the service targets everyday users rather than only luxury travelers. An example route from Los Angeles International Airport to the LA Memorial Coliseum would cost just under 100 dollars by premium rideshare, setting the benchmark for air taxi fares.

Archer Aviation serves as the official air taxi provider for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic and Paralympic Games, selected by the LA28 organizing committee. The company has acquired Hawthorne Municipal Airport, positioned two miles from Los Angeles International Airport and SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, as its main operational hub. Vertiports at this location will facilitate quick boarding and departures across the Greater Los Angeles area.

The vehicles are electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft equipped with multiple small propellers for quieter operation than helicopters. They produce a soft whoosh sound and fly at altitudes between 1,500 and 2,000 feet. Each aircraft has a maximum range of up to 100 miles and weighs approximately 6,500 pounds when fully loaded, comparable to a Tesla Model X but with twice the battery capacity.

Production occurs at a large facility in Atlanta, where each unit costs about 2.5 million dollars to build. The design resembles oversized drones with wings, optimized for short-distance urban trips and rapid charging. Riders will book flights via the Archer app, mirroring current ride-hailing platforms.

Trial flights begin this summer in Huntington Beach and select pilot cities, with commercial service potentially launching soon after regulatory approval. The federal government supports the rollout through the eVTOL Integration Pilot Program. Archer Aviation positions the service as a practical solution for routine commutes in one of America’s most traffic-heavy cities.
